Our Children & Youth Groups
There are three groups for children & young people at St Catherine’s:
• Infant Group for children aged 3 to 6 yrs (with their parents or carers if they are 3 years old). They meet in the Craftroom.
• Junior Group for children aged 7-10s. They meet in the Lounge.
• Youth Church for children in Year 6 and above. They meet in the Parlour.
Being an open-hearted, warm and friendly church community is one of our goals and welcoming children, young people and families is at the core of what we do and who we are.
The central part of our ministry to children is Children’s Church (what used to be called Sunday School). This takes place during the 10am service every week, unless there is an alltogethernow service (see below) or other special event.
Everyone starts together in church with the opening hymn and liturgy, but just before the Gloria the children are gathered at the front and prayed for and then they make their way to their different groups.
Each group does various activities, games and worship around the Bible story of the day. There’s space to explore the Christian faith, have fun and make friends.
All children’s church leaders have been DBS-checked.
On the first Sunday of the month we have our alltogethernow service at 10am, where absolutely everyone from 0 to 99 worships together. It’s fun, worshipful and tries to engage everyone – for some of the time at least!
The service provides a unique opportunity for everyone to be in church together – as a family. It’s the service where we might play a kazoo, build a tower, do a drama, win a quiz!
Children’s Corner and Crèche
In the church there is a Children’s Corner – a safe, bright corner where younger children can draw, read, sit and chat quietly before and after the service. Please be aware that children in the Children’s Corner remain your responsibility.
During the service on Sunday mornings, if your baby becomes unsettled please feel free to use the Narthex, Side Chapel or the Children’ Corner to comfort your child.
If your child is in Year 6 or above we’d love to see them in Youth Church which meets at the same time as Children’s Church. Every term we plan a programme of fun and interesting activities which will help the young people to grow in their faith, their friendship with each other and in their self-confidence.
Activies might include making a video, writing a drama script, studying the Bible, doing some art – as well as discussions about being a Christian and our role in the world. All packed into 40 minutes or so!
Family Day Out
Every summer, the whole church is invited out for a family-friendly day trip. It’s fun, good-value and a great way to hang out together.
Admission to Holy Communion
We admit children to Holy Communion from 7 onwards. Please discuss this with Sheridan if you’d like to know more.
If you’d like to have your child baptised, please speak to Sheridan.
